You’ll notice these colors often end with . Color words are adjectives. They like to change a little depending on the grammatical gender of what they describe.
Let’s try it with some real words:
zelený strom
green tree
žluté slunce
yellow sun
moře je modré
the sea is blue
mrak je šedý
the cloud is grey
Czech also likes to describe light and dark shades.
The word
světlý
light
means light, and
tmavý
dark
When we
add it to
another adjective
it changes
to fit the
word it
describes:
světle modrá
light blue
světle zelená
light green
tmavě červená
dark red
This is
how Czech
builds colors
— softly
joining
one describing
word to
another.
Sometimes,
a color
can even
become
the noun:
Bílá je krásná
white is beautiful
In these
cases,
Czech uses
the feminine
form,
because
the word
ta
barva
color
is feminine.
